Kitesurfing for beginners: how to start in Northeast Brazil
How many lessons you need, which spot to choose, what to bring and how to find a good school to learn kitesurfing in Brazil.

Northeast Brazil is one of the world’s best places to learn kitesurfing. Consistent wind, warm water and shallow-water spots make the learning curve much easier. Here’s what you need to know before your first lesson.
How long it takes to learn
Everyone learns at their own pace, but here’s a realistic timeline:
- First 2 hours: understand the wind, control the kite on the beach and bodydrag (get pulled by the kite through the water without a board).
- Between 4 and 6 hours: first attempts to get on the board.
- Between 6 and 10 hours: actual riding.
So if you want to leave riding, plan multiple hours and start early in your trip.
Choose a shallow-water spot
Learning where you can stand and no waves makes a huge difference. You fall, stand up and try again without exhausting yourself chasing your board. Good examples in the Northeast:
How to choose a good school
- Certified instructor with experience at that spot.
- Equipment in good shape and the right size for your weight and that day’s wind.
- Radio communication (helmet with radio) during water lessons is a great sign.
- Safety first: a good instructor teaches you how to release the kite in case of problems right away.
- Small groups or one-on-one lessons get better results.
At the end of each destination guide, we recommend a local school.
What to bring
- Swimwear and a rash guard for sun protection.
- Water-resistant sunscreen and glasses with a leash.
- Water bottle.
- Patience: wipeouts are part of learning, and everyone does them.
After lessons
When you can get on the board and ride both directions, the next step is practice with rented gear and supervision. Read our article on renting or bringing gear.
