Best time for kitesurfing in the Northeast: month-by-month guide
When it blows in Ceará, Piauí, Maranhão and Rio Grande do Norte. Northeast kite season month-by-month with destination tips.

Northeast Brazil is one of the world’s most consistent places for kitesurfing. For much of the year, steady, warm trade winds blow, the water is warm and the sun shows up almost every day. But there’s a big difference between peak season and the rest of the year — and between states.
Season at a glance
- Ceará, Piauí and Maranhão: July through January, peaking August through November.
- Rio Grande do Norte: August through January, strongest wind September through November.
- February to June: rainy season in northern Northeast. Wind gets lighter and less predictable, but there are still good days.
Every year is different. Before booking off-season, ask a local school how the wind’s been.
Month by month
July
Wind starts to build. Great for learners: wind tends to be a bit lighter than peak season, and spots are less crowded.
August to November
Heart of the season. Strong, consistent wind almost every day, late morning through late afternoon. The most popular time for kite riders worldwide, so book lodging and lessons in advance in places like Cumbuco and Jericoacoara.
December and January
Wind stays good at most spots, though less steady than peak. Year-end holidays pack the famous villages.
February to June
Rainy season. Wind drops and becomes less predictable. On the flip side, lagoons fill up — Lençóis Maranhenses look stunning — and prices fall.
Which destination for each season
- Early season (July): flat-water spots like Guajiru Island and Barra Grande are great to learn with lighter wind.
- Peak (August to November): all destinations work well. Experienced riders take advantage for downwinds and waves.
- Late season: Rio Grande do Norte, like São Miguel do Gostoso, often keeps strong wind through January.
Planning tips
- Book lessons right at the start of your trip: if wind dies one day, you can reschedule.
- Bring kites in different sizes if riding your own gear: wind varies through the day.
- Hydrate and use water-resistant sunscreen. Wind tricks you and Northeast sun burns fast.
